Find out what you could expect to pay for a care home, based on your savings, income, and care needs. Understand self-funding, local authority support, and NHS Continuing Healthcare.
Answer a few questions to get a personalised funding estimate. This is a guide only — contact your local authority for a formal assessment.
Important: These figures are estimates based on typical 2025 market rates and the capital thresholds set by the UK government (upper limit: £23,250). Property is included in the financial assessment if you are the sole owner and no dependent lives there. Always get a formal needs assessment from your local authority and independent financial advice before making care decisions.
Self-funded
If your capital (savings + property) is above £23,250 you pay the full cost yourself. Fees typically range from £800–£2,500+/week depending on location, care type, and room. The national average is around £1,100/week.
Local authority funded
If your capital falls below £23,250 your local authority steps in. They will fund care up to their set rate. If you prefer a more expensive home, a family member can pay a 'top-up' fee for the difference.
NHS Continuing Healthcare
If your primary need is a health need (not a social care need), the NHS may fund the full cost through CHC. This is assessed by a multi-disciplinary team and is not means-tested — it's need-based.
Funded Nursing Care (FNC)
If you're in a nursing home and need nursing care, the NHS contributes a flat weekly payment (currently £235.88/week) toward nursing costs, regardless of your financial situation.
